How I'm Building Ignite Gig
June 30, 2026 · 7 min read · By DB
Ignite Gig started as my own problem. As a tradesman with side income, tax season meant a shoebox of receipts and a weekend of dread. Every freelancer and gig worker I know has the same shoebox.
The app does one job: keep self-employed records CRA-ready all year. Snap a receipt, the AI reads it, categorizes it against T2125 expense lines, and files it. At tax time, you export clean records instead of excavating a shoebox.
Building it taught me more than any course. Receipt OCR is easy until the receipt is crumpled, faded, or from a gas station printer that ran out of ink in 2019. Category mapping is easy until you hit the edge cases where even accountants disagree. That's why the app has an AI concierge to explain its reasoning — and why it tells you, clearly, to verify decisions with a qualified tax professional. It's an assistant, not an accountant.
Ignite Gig is live on my own phone, processing my own receipts, before it asks for anyone's money. That's the standard for everything I ship: I'm the first user, and it has to survive my own tax season first.
